At Home In the Garden

This past week I met with a new client in her home.  One of my favorite spaces she had lovingly created is a small and charming garden space off her master bedroom.  It got me thinking about what it takes to create a lovely outdoor room.

How to Transform Your Master Bath!

We no longer want our bathrooms to be simply functional, we want them to also be spaces where we can relax and unwind and be visually inspired.  Ideally, it’s also a great idea to give it a touch of panache!  Here are a few things to keep in mind:

January - A New Year Brings New Inspiration

I've been searching for a quote to put on the wall at my back stair - A final thought to hold as I walk out into the day.

Some top contenders have been:

"Live well, laugh often, love much."

"A good laugh is sunshine in a house."

November – Money-Wise Investments in Your Home

As one year is drawing to a close and a new one is about to begin, it’s a natural time to set up goals and aspirations for the new year.  For our old home, I tend to make a list at the beginning of each year of the projects I’d like to take on in the following 12 months.

October – Comfort & Ritual at Home

"little thing comforts us because a little think afflicts us.”

                                       - Pascal

While I enjoy an adventure from the everyday as much as most people, I am aware more and more of certain comforts I find in routine.  I notice that small rituals each day bring me comfort and peace at home and at work.

September – Making An Old Space Feel New Again

This time of year, many of us start to think about getting our home ready for family and friends who will be coming to visit for the fall and winter holidays. I always like to make the space feel fresh and revitalized for the new season of entertaining! Here are a few ideas to consider as you think about freshening up your own space!

Gardening Tips and Tricks

(for the green thumb in all of us)

After a long week indoors at the office, there’s no better thing than being outside on a Saturday morning. I talk walks, have a little morning tea, chat with the neighbors, stop and smell the flowers. Saturday mornings help me reset my mind and body, and yellow sunshine and fresh air are a big part of that.

The Magic of Light!

Here are a few ideas to consider as you analyze the lighting in your home for possible improvements:

Light Seating Areas – but not too brightly!  Make sure you plan for a balanced approach including a bit of overhead lighting (preferably above a table at the center of the seating area) and then add lower lighting that will feel more intimate in the form of table lamps and floor lamps.  The right kind of lighting will draw people to a seating area.

An Organized Home

Our neighborhood is getting ready to host a community yard sale – which has gotten me to go thru closets and drawers and to think a lot about organizing one’s life.

With that goal in mind, I’ve given some thought to what we’ve done in the past to work organization into our design plans for clients, as well as a few new ideas I’m thinking of incorporating for my own home:

A Well Dressed Home for the Holidays

Here are a few simple ideas on how to prepare your home for the winter holiday season of entertaining:

All Aglow:  We all look best with warm light at face level instead of just from above.  Candles are great for this – but also consider adding beautiful lamps to your buffet or server.  Remember – Atmosphere is half the battle!

Common Design Mistakes - And How to Avoid Them!

Over the past couple of decades working as a designer, I have observed there are a few common mistakes that are often made that cause an interior space to not have as much harmony and balance as would be possible.

Here are a few that I've seen along with some tips on how to avoid them.

Scale & Proportion:  Or rather, the lack of good scale and proportion!

This element of design applies to all aspects of a project, whether it is with scale and proportions of furnishings fitting together, kitchen details or even accessories.

Creating a Pet Friendly Home

I think pets are such a wonderful enhancement to quality of life. I know not all of my friends would agree with me on this one – but I can’t imagine going thru life without the playful company of a four legged friend.

Here are a few ideas on how you can make your home environment one that will work well for both you and your canine or kitty companion.
